2018: Week 1 Top-10

By Damian Hall 03/05/2018

Week 1 of the 2018 season is in the books. Not surprisingly the weather played a factor and many games were moved, delayed, or canceled throughout the week. But many games were played including a big top-3 matchup. The results of the week shook up our poll dramatically.

10. Durham Academy Cavaliers (0-0) [NR]

The Cavaliers were just on the outside looking in on the pre-season poll. With some of the losses from last week they make their debut. Reports out of scrimmages say the boys in green have arguably the most dangerous player on the field in Sr. LSM Tyler Carpenter. They open the season this week against Christ School.

9. Wakefield Wolverines (1-0) [8]

The Wolverines opened the season with a win against Northwood 14-11. Their game against Enloe was canceled due to weather. They have no scheduled games this week.

8. Holly Springs Golden Hawks (1-0) [9]

Attackman Matt Calleri (4g/2a) lead the hawks to a 14-5 win over conference foe Apex Friendship, allowing them to leap-frog Wakefield this week. Holly Springs will be tested throughly this week when they travel to Middle Creek on Tuesday.

7. Ravenscroft Ravens (0-1) [6]

Ravenscroft fell in a close game with Charlotte Country Day. The Ravens will look to bounce back against Christ School and West Forsyth this week.

6. Green Hope Falcons (1-0) [7]

Senior Aiden Callahan went (5g/3a) against Cary last week to lead the Falcons to a conference win. Their game with Broughton was canceled due to weather to this Wednesday. This week they will also play Heritage and Riverside.

5. East Chapel Hill (1-0) [NR]

Biggest jump this week as they beat previous #5 Jordan 20-11 in the innagural battle for the I-40 trophy. The Wildcats will face-off against Heritage and Orange this week.

4. Broughton Capitals (0-1) [3]

Broughton was more than doubled up by #1 Middle Creek last week. They will need to bounce back big time against #6 Green Hope before a vicious week 3 schedule.

3. Apex Cougars (1-0) [3]

The Cougars welcomed Garner to the SWAC with an 18-0 shutout. They will squared off in back to back days against Fuquay-Varina and Centennial (GA). The Bengals and Knights are both undefeated so far in the 2018 season. Centennial lost in the GA state semi-finals in 2017.

2. Cardinal Gibbons (1-1) [2]

The Crusaders split their games in week 1. They won against new conference foe Leesville and lost a last-second heart-breaker to Lake Norman down in Charlotte the next day. Gibbons will travel to Sanderson

1. Middle Creek Mustangs (2-0) [1]

The Mustangs stampeded into 2018 and extended their winning streak to 24 games with wins over #4 Broughton and RJ Reynolds by a combined 28-12 score. Making it to 27 will be much more difficult as Middle Creek plays #8 HOlly Springs, Garner, and 2017 GA State Champ Lassiter this week,
