2019 Conference Preview: Girl's Cap-7

By Damian Hall 02/19/2019

The Cap-7 has had a consistent pecking order for a few seasons. 2019 may have a couple teams looking to shake up the formula

Team Previews

Cardinal Gibbons

The thrice defending state champs haven't lost to a school from North Carolina since falling to Lake Norman in the 2015 state championship. The Crusaders graduated talented players such as Grace Nelson (Virginia Tech), Elizabeth Wilson (Richmond), Forbes Collier, Hayden Callahan (Davidson), and stalwart goalie Gabby Young (Trinity College). In spite of this, Gibbons will be looking to reload, and the senior class to make it a perfect 4/4 with another state championship run. Gibbons will be led by seniors Grace New (Louisville), Caroline Kimmel (East Carolina), EllaReeves Vaughn (Virginia), and Catherine Fields (Villanova). Replacing Young will be the big question for the Crusaders. Her career save percentage of .800 is not something that comes around often.

Millbrook

The Millbrook Wildcats finished 3rd place in the Cap-7 in 2018. The Wildcats were led by departed seniors Dana Florian (William Peace), Emily Peterson, Taylor Tippins and AJ Upchurch. Millbrook returns its leading scorer from 2018 in senior Livy Luckinbill. Luckinbill will be the center of the Wildcats offense and will look to fellow seniors Parker Moore and Grace Evens (G) to help Millbrook move up the ranks in the Cap-7 and make another playoff run in 2019.

Leesville Road

The Pride are going to be looking to rebuild in 2019. Leesville loses its top two scorers in Izzee Akers and Chandler Boneham. Leesville will to build from the back forward as they return two senior goalies Maria Schelfe and Hailey Williams. Sennior Tori Ellsworth and Sophomore Tessa Hall will likely be asked to carry the load offensively this season.

Broughton

Broughton comes into the 2019 season having been the conference runner up last season. The Capitals enter 2019 with 4/5 of their top scorers from 2018, including Senior Margaret Anne Warner (Davidson) and Junior Addie Camak (Wofford). The defensive end will be led by Senior Greer Eckard (Wofford) and sophomore keeper Lauren Bryner. The Capitals will be looking to make another deep run in the playoffs in 2019.

Sanderson

Sanderson finished the 2018 season in 5th place. In 2019 the Spartans return many of their top players. Sanderson returns their top three scorers in Seniors Melissa Ozturk, Paighton Hill, and Karah Terry. Terry also led Sanderson in Draw Controls and was second in ground balls in 2018. The Spartans will look to avenge some close losses in 2018 and move up the conference ranks.

Enloe

The Eagles finished the 2018 campaign just shy of a .500 record. 2019 will have Enloe staring at a roster that is missing 4/6 of 2018's top scorers, including: Maryssa and Alex Almasy, Caroline Malarkey, and Cheyene Hoke. Juniors Abby Stauffer and Laura Cooper will look to lead the Eagles for this spring’s campaign.
