US Lacrosse Youth Officials/Level 1 training

By Rick Wooten 08/10/2019

The 2019-2020 boys' lacrosse season is almost here. The Triangle Men's Lacrosse Officials Association is preparing to hold its annual fall youth officials' clinic. This notice is for any youth players who are at least 14, and have an interest in youth officiating.

The fall US Lacrosse youth officials training classroom sessions will be held at Cardinal Gibbons High School on the following dates:

Saturday August 24 from 8:30-4:30

Sunday August 25 from 1-4

Cost of the clinic is $60 to cover the manual, patch, Saturday lunch and other incidentals. Please contact Rick Wooten at rickwooten.tmloa@gmail.com if you wish to attend the fall training. Once you complete all the requirements, you will be eligible to officiate at both the Raleigh Lax Fest in early November and the Duke Snowflake in early December.

Other criteria that must be met in addition to the 10 hours of classroom covering rules and mechanics are as follow:

  1. Must be a current member of US Lacrosse. If already a member as a player but not as a youth officials, simply notify US Lacrosse to add Official to your membership criteria. Email membership@uslacrosse.org or call membership at 410-235-6882, ext. 102 during regular business hours.
  2. Pass the online rules and penalty course on the USL website.
  3. Make at least an 85 on both the 25 question US Lacrosse Youth Rules Test and the 100 question US Lacrosse NFHS rules test. You can take the test as many times as needed to pass and you get 2 chances on every question to get the correct answer. The test isn't geared to separate the wheat from the chafe but it is geared to getting you to read the rules book and know the rules.
  4. Pass the on field evaluation.

If you certify in the fall, you will have to re-certify in the spring when the new rules come out. That process is a lot easier, only 3-4 hours of classroom, another field evaluation and passing both tests with an 85. There is no charge for the recertification clinic.

There will also be an opportunity on February 1 and 2 to take the classroom portion.
