Second Look: 2017 4A Playoffs

By Damian Hall 04/23/2017

It has only been a few days since our early look at the 4A playoffs, but there have been some significant changes and we have some new information. With just 5 competition days left, this week could get hectic

Below you can find the playoff breakdown as of 4/23/17. Conference leaders are marked in orange, but no ranking is implied in this listing. We will save that for later in the week when the picture clears up even more.

The Bubble

A few teams are still on the bubble. The first team out is Sanderson. The Spartans are 5-8 and have two games this week that could push them into the playoffs. Splitting their games would put them tied with the last four in. Winning both would most likely put them over the top, and could drastically shift the regions.

Three teams are currently sitting at .40 win percentage: Holly Springs (6-9), S. Mecklenburg (4-6), and W. Forsyth (6-9). Of these teams only Holly Springs plays this week (unless there are tournaments in the west which I have not been able to confirm). Just behind those teams is Northern Durham (5-8) who controls their own destiny.

Major games

The last week of the public school season will not be without a fair share of big games. Many of the conferences are just about played out, but several key games remain.

Broughton vs Heritage - Heritage let a shot at the outright conference championship slip through their fingers on Friday night. However, the Huskies can still earn a share by avenging an early-season OT loss on Tuesday night.

Green Hope/Apex vs Middle Creek - There aren't many tilts in the SWAC that aren't big games, but either of these could have a huge playoff impact. The Mustangs are looking to complete a perfect regular season and the Falcons and Cougars are all that stand in the way.

Sanderson vs Wakefield/Wake Forest - The Spartans need one of these two games to hope for a final playoff spot. Both would secure it. Sanderson lost to Wakefield earlier in the season and managed a 2-goal victory against the Cougars.

Northern Durham vs Kerr Vance Academy/Village LC - The Knights are in right now, but need to at least split the week to stay that way.

We will update playoff situation again after Tuesday's games. We will lock in conference champs, check the bubble, and get first look at regional seedings!
