Broughton Rallies Past Heritage In Overtime

By Damian Hall 03/16/2017

Wake Forest - Broughton escaped a cold and windy Tuesday night with an overtime victory against Heritage. A four goal run spanning the 4th quarter and overtime helped the capitals overcome a three-goal deficit.

The Capitals opened up the scoring just 30 seconds into the game when freshman Ben Haugh scored the first of his three goals on the night. Broughton extended its lead when Haugh's classmate Gordon Guest scored on a fast break goal. Lead by Keelan Seneca's two goals, the rest of the first belonged to the Huskies who reeled off four goals to close the quarter and take a 4-2 lead.

Broughton opened the second stanza scoring, again, just seconds into the quarter when Van Parker found Nick Cattano on the back side of a scramble situation to pull the Caps within one. The teams traded goals for the majority of rest of the period and Heritage took a 7-5 lead into the half.

The third quarter opened with Seneca completing his hat trick two minutes in, extending the Husky lead to three. Broughton's Guest and Haugh scored back to back goals within two minutes of one another to close the lead to just one with just under five minutes to go. Heritage responded with goals from Ryan Cornell and Evan Savage giving them a 10-7 lead going into the final quarter.

From there on it was all Broughton. Parker scored two goals in the first three minutes and David Liggett unleashed a bomb from 16 yards to tie the game at 10 with 6:39 to go in the game. The next five minutes saw both teams traded possessions and timeouts.

Heritage took their last timeout with 1:03 on the clock. The Huskies were called with a stalling penalty with just 20 seconds to go when they stepped out of the offensive zone. Broughton missed the final shot of the game to send it to overtime.

In the extra period Broughton's Same Stein won the face-off and got the ball behind to Cattano. Cattano rolled the other side of the crease and threw the ball back to Stein who finished a few yards out for the win.
