RALEIGH - There is nothing quite like starting the season against your biggest conference rival.
Tuesday night Broughton and Leesville renewed that rivalry to start the 2017 boy's lacrosse season.
This was the eleventh meeting between the two Cap-8 opponents. Broughton held an overall series lead of 9-2 going into Tuesday night's showdown. A poised and veteran team stepped in and pushed toward another notch in the win column and overcame The Pride 13-8 in the first game for both teams.
Broughton started the game on a 4-0 run to start the first quarter. Freshman Ben Haugh(2g) opened scoring with his first career goal when he dodged down the left hand alley and slipped it by the Leesville keeper. Sophomore Van Parker (5g) scored a couple minutes later. The third goal was scored by Freshman Gordon Guest when he swept across the front of the goal and buried the first of his career. Parker notched his second to finish the run.
Leesville got on the board half way through the first when Zack Blakeman stepped down on a feed from Kevin Steele and bounced on over the Broughton goalie to make it 4-1. Broughton's Parker scored his third of the quarter to put the Caps back up 4. Leesville ended the quarter with back to back goals to end the quarter 5-3 in favor of the home team.
The second quarter had first-game jitters under control and had just two goals, both by Broughton, to make the halftime score 7-3.
Broughton opened the second half with Haugh scoring his second on a feed from Parker 1:07 into the period. The teams traded goals over the next 3 minutes. The Pride scored on an extra-man goal from Steele and the Caps got an unassisted goal from Nick Cattano (2g, 1a) when he sprinted past his defender from the endline.
Parker netted his fourth goal of the night to make the score 10-4 giving the Caps their largest lead of the game. A barrage of fouls and back and forth scoring ended the second half of the quarter with the score 12-6.
A stick penalty gave Leesville the ball to start the fourth, but Leesville was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Play went back and forth with neither team able to cash in until junior Clay Schrum buried a feed from classmate Alex Agnolutto to put the Broughton up 13-6.
In true Leesville fashion they never gave up and each of the Blakeman brothers was able to put one away. Danny's goal came with just 19 seconds to go and gave the game it's final score of 13-8.
As to be expected from the first game of the year, the game was riddled with turnovers as the two teams combined for 47. Broughton out shot the Pride 40-24 while Leesville edged the face-off battle winning 14/24.
Leesville will host Garner (0-1, 0-0) on Friday night while Brought travels to Sanderson (1-0,0-0) in what is actually a non-conference matchup (in terms of playoff standings).
